I’ve started a sketch for a series of books set in 2149. Tech advancements were on a roll, until Blackjack hit. Blackjack – named for the year 2121 – was a plague that wiped out almost 60% of the earth’s population.
Dennis Mulhearn was born just before the plague hit. His parents died and, like many kids his age, he grew up in a state-sponsored orphanage. To fulfil his debt, Dennis was enlisted into the military, and saw lots of bloody action in the southern US.
Now he’s back, running his own investigation service. He was supposed to meet a potential client, but the client never showed. As he was exiting the building, someone shot at him.
Now, he and his ex-sexsynth assistant have to figure out who wanted to hire him, what the job was, and who wants him out of the way.
Tech advancement is almost back on track. Pundits are saying that injectable health nanobots are around the corner. So is lab-grown meat, and cloned replacement organs. Cancer was on the verge of being wiped out – until people started croaking from it again.
I’m really looking forward to exploring the setting. Kinda like cyberpunk, but not as rainy or gritty. Just as deadly, though.
What do you think? Is this a setting you’d like to read about? Let me know in the comments below.
